Announcement: We’re still on for 4:25 BodyPump this Friday (New Year’s Eve), but BodyFlow is canceled because the gym closes at 6. The dinner club will pick up on January 7. Happy New Year!
A lot of us think about life changes as the new year approaches. We think about new jobs, new fitness plans, new home projects.
Oprah Winfrey – in a move sure to make every retiree on earth look bad – is starting a new network. In the current issue of O Magazine, she talks about the decision, and what a scary move it is for her. She says it is the first time in her life she’s ever been scared to do something. (Welcome to our world, Oprah!)
“For anybody who is thinking about taking a risk,” Oprah says, “you have to always come back to: What are your fundamental principles, what are your fundamental beliefs about yourself and your reason for doing whatever?”
This is such a big question so many of us forget to ask. We think of something we want or something we want to do, and that becomes the end product. We forget the why. Who are you, and why are you doing what you’re doing?
So often what we want- or what we think we want – is about ego. Say you want a cool job. What is it you really want? Close your eyes and maybe you see yourself working happily, feeling purposeful and excited about your contribution to the world. So the next question is, where in your life do you feel happy now? What makes you feel purposeful and excited in your life as it is right now?
Thinking of life decisions in this manner has radically changed the way I live. My life is not always easy, but it is authentic. It is me.
I’ll leave you with another quote from Oprah I’ve written up on the white board above my desk:
“Let this be the year you release your fears about what you can achieve. Know for sure what you want and be willing to give yourself what you need to get it.”
